How to have good public speaking skills

Public speaking is one of the major concern for the number of people. They do not feel confident or comfortable while expressing their ideas publicly, the lack of confidence they experience is mostly related to their fear of embarrassment and hesitation they feel while delivering the message. It is one of the major cause, from a survey it has also been noted that many people forgot the words and their brain just stopped processing any further information which causes them to experience an awkward silence situation in front of their audience. Even some people experience high blood rate as soon as they are nearer to speak which is the reason behind their nervousness, their voice changes its tone. However, I can truly relate these things as I have already passed through this.

In my beginning, I was same just like every normal person, started sweating just before my turn, Being in nervousness and forgetting words whenever go on a stage to deliver my presentation and try to skip the topic to reach the conclusion and end my session. After giving 5 to 8 sessions I improved with every session as practising was making me perfect but I cannot consider my self as a perfect one but good enough to deliver my message to the audience. I started with reading paragraph method to improve my speaking skills and then work on my expressions and gesture to deliver my message effectively and to seek the attention of my audience. Seeking attention of your audience is one your important task as a public speaker you should deliver your message in a way that your audience show interest, You have to diverge their mind in a way that they do not get bored with your presentation and to do this the first task is to know your audience, you should be aware of your audience, their field and their bit of background. However, this can be achieved by a short survey of your audience before the session and if you know your audience this task will be skipped and it will be easier for you to seek their attention. The second step is to make your topics or collect your data from different sources relevant to your presentation. Your data or topic should not be way lengthy or off the topic which will ruin your presentation. Try to thoroughly research your topic and collect as many data as possible and then finalize it by selecting important points. The third and final step is to prepare your self for the day, practice to speak by looking in the mirror which will help you a lot in understanding your facial expressions and gestures and also boost your confidence. Concentrate on your tone, your tone should not be way high or low. Your voice should be confident and your posture should be straight and strong.

Now if we summarize the steps they can be

  • Know your Audience to seek their attention
  • Collect enough data by researching and finalize the important and relevant points
  • Prepare your self to speak, Work on your facial expressions, Gestures, voice tone and your posture.
And also keep your data with you to recall any point if you forget any and don't panic if you forgot as it's normal, you just need to skip to the next word to balance the situation. Keep speaking and expressing your ideas freely. Good luck!
